The BTNEF is driven to fill in the gaps of nonprofit organizations financial needs where research has been conducted to show a compelling and current need. The process for applying to BTNEF is simple. The instructions and application, at the end of this section, should be followed and completed. Applications for funding are reviewed once per year by an initial Funding Committee. The Committee’s recommendations forwarded to the full Board of Directors for further consideration. The Board will announce awards by letter/e-mail with next steps instructions. There is no appeal from the determination of the Funding Committee or the Board of Directors.
It is anticipated that recipients will leverage other financial resources to extend the benefits of investments made by BTNEF. The transformation that will occur in communities cannot be underestimated. Scaffolding is a construction term. It also has an application in BTNEF. We believe that one step builds upon another and yet another. The strength of individuals, families and communities should be the focus of investment recipients. Too often piecemeal approaches to community and economic development have been brought problems unintended because the needs were addressed as temporary issues. The assistance came with impatience and it departed too soon. A short outcome with long-term impacts is the desired model. This ensures that BTNEF will be known as an endowment with a purpose.
We seek to serve Black Americans (Freedmen and Freedwomen; the offspring of those enslaved before emancipation, which includes ALL generations of chattel slavery survivors) in pursuit of prosperity that is free from discrimination, slander, violence, hate crimes, exploitation, obligation, debt, depression, servitude, stolen identity and forced separation from their culture, heritage, spirituality and knowledge of self. The 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution states; that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law nor be denied equal protection under the law within its jurisdiction. The 13th Amendment states; neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.
